How Often Do Fire Extinguishers Need to Be Inspected?

Monthly by you, annually by a licensed provider. Those two cover almost everything most buildings need to do.

Two longer intervals sit behind them, at six years and at the hydrostatic test date. Almost nobody knows about them, and a current annual tag tells you nothing about either one.

Here is the part nobody writes down: for a standard ABC extinguisher, both of those long intervals usually end in a new extinguisher rather than a service. That is worth understanding before you approve anything.

The monthly and annual requirements come from NFPA 10, which sets the monthly visual inspection at 7.2.1 and the annual maintenance check at 7.3.1. That is the standard the fire code adopts, so it is what your marshal is working from.

OSHA 1910.157 sets the same two intervals at (e)(2) and (e)(3) as a workplace duty on the employer.

The hydrostatic interval is not always twelve years. NFPA 10 Table 8.3.1 puts carbon dioxide and most water-based units on a five-year cycle, and common dry chemical cylinders on twelve.

Monthly: Yours to Do, and Genuinely Simple

This one is free and takes about five minutes in a typical building. Staff are only looking, never opening, discharging, or repairing anything.

At each unit, confirm:

  • It is in its assigned spot, visible, and not blocked
  • It is mounted, not sitting on the floor or a shelf
  • The gauge is in the green, on units that have a gauge
  • The pin and tamper seal are intact
  • The hose and nozzle are clear and uncracked
  • The cylinder has no dents, rust, or leakage
  • The operating instructions face out and can be read
  • The annual tag is present and not expired

Anything a person can fix by moving a box, fix that day. Anything involving the extinguisher itself goes to your provider.

Write it down the same day. NFPA 10 expects twelve consecutive monthly records, and a marshal asking for proof is asking for that log, not for initials on a tag.

A spreadsheet with the date, location, result, and who walked it is enough. That list doubles as your equipment inventory, which is what you will need the first time you get a quote.

Annually: What a Provider Owes You

Annual maintenance is a real evaluation of each unit, not just a fresh tag on the handle. It runs $30 per extinguisher with us, plus the $100 service call.

The visit should include the cylinder, hose, nozzle, handle, pin, and seal, a pressure or weight check appropriate to the type, confirmation that the unit still suits the hazard next to it, and a dated tag.

It should also flag anything due at a longer interval. That is the part that separates providers, because the six-year and hydro dates are invisible to you and obvious to the person holding the extinguisher.

Schedule before the tag expires, not after. Month thirteen is a violation, and it is the single most cited finding in commercial buildings.

Six Years and the Hydro Test: What Actually Happens

At six years, a stored-pressure dry chemical extinguisher that carries a twelve-year hydrostatic interval has to be emptied and internally examined. NFPA 10 sets that at 7.3.6, and OSHA 1910.157(e)(4) matches it.

The unit is discharged, the valve comes off, and the inside is inspected for corrosion and caked powder. The valve stem, o-rings, and gaskets get replaced, then it is refilled, repressurized, and fitted with a new verification collar.

None of that can be seen from outside. A six-year-old cylinder can look perfect and be compromised inside, which is the entire reason the interval exists.

The hydrostatic test is a different job. The cylinder is emptied, filled with water, and pressurized to prove the metal can still hold pressure safely. If it fails, it is condemned and scrapped.

Both require a facility. We subcontract that work, which is true of roughly half the firms in this business.

Why Both Usually End in a New Extinguisher

Here is the conversation as it actually happens in a building.

I just tell them to replace it. “This one is due for replacement. I carry two options, certified pre-owned and brand new.”

If aesthetic is important to you, go new. Certified pre-owned is about $30 or so cheaper, but they do not always look brand new.

I do not even explain the difference between a six-year and a hydro, because most people do not care. It is the same answer either way.

The reason is arithmetic, not preference. A new 10 lb ABC is $125 from us and a certified pre-owned one is $90, and both arrive fully serviced, certified, and tagged.

Sending that same cylinder out, paying for internal maintenance, a recharge, and freight, then getting a six-year-old extinguisher back, does not come out ahead.

Two cases go the other way, and they are worth naming because they cost us the sale.

Clean agent is the clear one. Testing a Halotron cylinder costs less than half of replacing it, so we test those.

CO2 is close enough to be a real choice, and we will quote you both. Anything standard, we replace, and you should expect a provider to tell you plainly which side of that line your unit is on.

How to Find Your Six-Year Date

The annual tag does not show it. There are three places to look, in the order worth trusting.

The service collar is king. You have to physically take the extinguisher apart to put a collar on, so it cannot be added casually. It is punched with a month and year, and that is what I go by.

If there is no collar, look for a sticker. A sticker can be faked, so it is weaker evidence than a collar.

If the unit is less than six years old there is no collar yet. Check the label, usually the bottom right, or the stamp on the bottom of the cylinder depending on the brand. Add six years to the manufacture date.

That collar is the small band around the neck of the cylinder, under the valve. If you have never noticed one, walk over and look, because it takes ten seconds and it is the only honest record of internal service on the unit.

Keep the hydro record separately. OSHA requires a certification record with the test date, the tester’s signature, and the unit’s serial number at 1910.157(f)(16).

Nobody Is Going to Catch This For You

Worth being honest about how this gets enforced, because it changes how much energy the long intervals deserve.

I do not find them overdue too often. From time to time I see it, usually with current annual tags right on the unit.

The fire marshal almost never checks. They check for the tag and move on.

So this is not a fine you are dodging. It is the difference between an extinguisher that will work and one that has never been opened since the day it was built.

That gap is exactly why the interval is easy to skip and worth keeping. The failure mode is not a citation, it is a unit that does not discharge.
