The 75-Foot Fire Extinguisher Rule Explained
The rule is not a spacing rule. It is a coverage rule, and almost everyone who quotes it has it backward.
People hear seventy five feet and picture extinguishers mounted every seventy five feet down a wall. What the standard actually says is that no employee should have to travel more than 75 feet to reach one.
Those are different requirements, and they produce different buildings.
The Rule Is a Radius, Not a Gap
NFPA 10 sets the Class A travel distance at 75 feet or less in Table 6.2.1.1, and the fire code adopts that standard. It is what a fire marshal is working from.
OSHA 1910.157(d)(2) puts the same 75 feet on the employer as a workplace duty.
Read it as a circle rather than a ruler. Each extinguisher covers everything within 75 feet of walking distance around it, in every direction.

The best way to think about it is that there is a 75 foot radius of coverage around each extinguisher.
So putting them 75 feet apart is actually over-covering. The radius from each one would overlap.
The rule is about the building itself. You should never be more than 75 feet from an extinguisher, and that has totally different implications.
Follow that arithmetic and it changes the count. In a straight, open corridor, two extinguishers can sit as much as 150 feet apart and still leave no point more than 75 feet from one, because each reaches 75 feet in both directions.
That number is a consequence of the rule, not a specification to build from. It only holds in a straight run with nothing in the way.
Travel Distance Is the Walking Path
The 75 feet is measured along the route a person can actually walk. It is not measured through walls.
This is where floor plans mislead people. An extinguisher 50 feet away in a straight line can be a 90 foot walk once you account for the wall between you and it, the door you have to go around, and the corner past that.

A radius drawn on a floor plan is a starting point, not an answer. Walls, locked doors, tenant suites, and storage racks all collapse a circle that looks fine on paper.
Warehouse racking is the clearest case. Racks create aisles, and the aisle route to an extinguisher is almost always longer than the distance across the open floor.
Other Hazards Change the Test Entirely
Seventy five feet is the Class A number. The other classes are not just shorter, they are measured differently.
Class B is measured from the hazard, not from a person. OSHA 1910.157(d)(4) sets the limit at 50 feet or less from the Class B hazard area to an extinguisher, so the thing you measure from is the solvent station or the fuel storage itself.

The table above is the OSHA version. NFPA 10 handles Class B differently, setting it as a travel distance of 30 or 50 feet depending on the unit’s rating and the hazard level.
Note that the kitchen number is not in the OSHA distribution section at all. It comes from the fire code, which is worth knowing if someone quotes you a single standard for all of it.

Sprinklers Can Replace Class A Extinguishers
This one surprises people, and it is in the standard. It also does not apply to most buildings.
Having sprinklers is not enough. The substitution requires standpipes or hose stations connected to that system, and that is rare to see in a normal commercial property.
If your building has sprinkler heads in the ceiling and nothing else, this section is not about you.
OSHA 1910.157(d)(3) permits uniformly spaced standpipe systems or hose stations connected to a sprinkler system to be used instead of Class A portable extinguishers.
The conditions are real ones. The system has to meet its own standard, it has to provide total coverage of the protected area, and employees have to be trained in its use at least annually.
That last condition is what usually decides it. Annual documented training for every employee is a larger commitment than mounting extinguishers.
What Actually Goes Wrong
The failure is almost never a building that misses 75 feet by a mile. It is smaller than that.

What I see is placement that does not match the layout. People put them too close together, or they forget to cover one room entirely.
Sometimes they are just slightly off from where I would have put them, because I have seen a lot of buildings and they have seen one.
Those two failures are the same failure. Someone thought in spacing rather than coverage, clustered the units, and then a back room fell outside every radius.
Rooms people forget are consistent: storage rooms, back-of-house areas, mechanical and electrical rooms, and additions built after the original layout. Anywhere a person can stand is inside the rule.

How Many You Need
There is no formula, and anyone who gives you one has not seen your building.
It depends entirely on the hazards and the layout. Two buildings with identical square footage can need very different counts, because one is an open floor and the other is chopped into suites with doors between them.

Usually I eyeball it, and I only do that when I am 100 percent confident.
If there is any doubt at all, I use a laser measuring tool. It makes measuring quick, so there is no reason to guess.
That is the honest version of a placement review. Most of a building is obvious to someone who has walked hundreds of them, and the parts that are not obvious get measured rather than estimated.
This Is Rarely What Gets You Cited
Worth saying plainly, because it cuts against the way this topic is usually sold.
I have not seen a fire marshal cite travel distance. They are walking your building looking for expired tags, blocked access, and missing units, not pacing out corridors with a wheel.
That does not make the rule optional. It means the reason to get placement right is that someone has to reach the thing during the ninety seconds it would still do any good, not that an inspector is going to catch you.

Does 75 feet mean I put an extinguisher every 75 feet?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Each extinguisher covers a 75 foot radius of travel, so mounting them 75 feet apart overlaps their coverage and buys you units you did not need.
Can I just measure it on the floor plan?
Only as a first pass. The code measures the walking path, so a plan that ignores walls, doors, and racking will tell you a room is covered when it is not.
Does one extinguisher cover two floors?
No. Treat every floor as its own building, because nobody is going downstairs to get an extinguisher during a fire.
What if I cannot mount one where the coverage gap is?
Floor stands and cabinets exist for open floors, warehouse columns, and walls you cannot drill. The unit still has to be visible, reachable, and at a proper height.
Who is responsible in a leased building, the owner or the tenant?
The lease decides it, and the gap usually appears where the lease is vague. Confirm in writing who covers common areas and who covers the inside of each suite.
The Bottom Line
Stop measuring the distance between extinguishers. Measure the distance from every corner of your building to the nearest one.
That single change usually reveals both problems at once, the units bunched together and the room nobody covered.
Then check the walking path rather than the floor plan, use the shorter distance wherever a hazard demands it, and treat each floor on its own.
